Finger wave is a method of setting hair into waves that were popular in the 1930s and the late 1990s for women’s vintage or retro hairstyle. It looks great for every occasion and can be worn with either short or long hair.

Finger wave hairstyle can be worn to obtain a very glamorous look. This style used to be reserved for fancy dress parties but it recently had a comeback and is now worn by most fashionistas. The waving process involves pinching the wet hair and combing it in alternating directions into an S-shaped wave using fingers and comb and drying it out without any disturbance to retain the shape.

Here’s how you can do it yourself!

  • You need to start with wet hair for this style to take hold, so go ahead and wet your hair but make sure that it is not dripping wet.
  • Apply any type of strong-hold hair gel. Use an ample amount towards the top and front of your hair where the finger waves will be, and wear a smaller amount throughout the rest of your hair.
  • Use a fine-toothed comb to create a deep part on one side. Extend it back further than you normally would, so it almost reaches the crown of your head.
  • Comb your hair towards the front on the bigger side of the part. Leave the smaller side untouched for now. Comb your hair straight forward.
  • Press down the hair on the parallel part using your finger. Align your finger with the part and press down to keep the hair next to the part in place.
  • Comb the hair next to your finger backwards keeping your finger firmly in place, so that the hair underneath it stays in position. Now use the comb to set the hair right next to your finger backwards so that the hair is going in the opposite direction from the previous setting.
  • Position your middle finger next to your forefinger. Using your middle finger, hold the hair right next to your forefinger in place.
  • Pinch the two fingers together and secure the hair with gel. Hold it in place with a pin parallel.
  • You can comb the rest of your hair backwards into a bun if you have long hair or you can make more waves. You can fingerwave all your hair if you have short or medium length hair.
  • You can make more waves. Comb the hair right next to the pin forward, and hold it there with your forefinger. Comb the hair next to your forefinger backwards, and hold it there with your middle finger. Pinch your fingers together and secure the hair that lifts between them with a pin.
  • Let your hair dry. Your hair should completely dry before taking out the pins. Don’t take them out while your hair is still wet, or the waves will fall out.
  • Spray your hair with hairspray. Make sure your look stays in place by using hairspray to secure it. Spray the front and sides of your hair.
